- When you are
15 1/2 (you cannot do this before), you and someone legally responsible
for you must go to the license bureau and obtain a temporary driver's
license "packet." This is a large envelope which contains
the white paper copy of the temps. They will also take your picture
and issue a photo ID card.
- To obtain the
packet, you are required to have with you the following: the original
copy of your birth certificate and your social security card. Both
you and your parent/guardian will be required to sign a form (under
Joint Responsibility law). There is a fee for the packet.
- They will give
you a copy of the District of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. When
you have studied it sufficiently that you feel you can pass a written
test over the laws and signs, you must take the packet to any state
licensing examination station to take the written test (the addresses
are in the back of the Digest). NO appointment is necessary. Some
examination stations are closed on Sunday and Monday.
- If you pass the
written test and eye exam, the examiner will validate the paper copy
(from packet). This is your temporary license good for one year.
- When driving on a Temporary Permit at 15 1/2 you must drive with your parent, guardian, or certified driving instructor seated beside you in the front seat area. You cannot drive between the hours of 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM unless withyour parent or guardian. At age 16 you may drive on your temps with any licensed driver 21 or older.
- Your temporary
license is not valid until the white paper copy has been validated
by the state license examiner. Your photo ID is not your temporary
license.
- Your temporary
permit is valid for 1 year from the issue date.
- You must hold
your temps for at least 6 months from the issue date
before taking the driving test.
